June: Contact Lenses: Fittings: why are they important?
With so many websites out there recently claiming to be able to sell contact lenses with out seeing a dr. in person I feel this is an important topic to discuss. This month we are going to focus on the fitting and why it is so important!!! Last month we learned about the cornea, well in order to keep your cornea healthy we do contact lens fittings!!! Eyes are not all the same shape and size: thus contacts are not all the same shape and size.
What is a contact lens fitting? During a contact lens fitting Dr. Humpherys measures the curvature of your cornea to ensure the contact lens will fit and not be too loose or too tight. A contact lens that fits too tight can deprive the eye of very essential oxygen and can lead to some very serious problems. During the contact lens fitting the wearing schedule will be reviewed to ensure the patient understands how often the contact lenses should be changed out and check the fit of the contact lens on the eye to ensure optimal comfort and vision. It is important when scheduling your eye exam that you let us know that either you wear contacts or are interested in wearing contacts so we schedule enough time for this very important contact lens fitting.
