Heart Health and Your Eyes!
When Dr. Ward and Dr. Palmer performs an eye exam, one of the many things they do is look at the blood vessels in your eyes. Your eyes can say a lot about what’s going on in your body, including if your blood pressure is high. High blood pressure can cause what’s called hypertensive retinopathy. In this condition, the blood vessels in your retina begin to thicken and constrict. If left untreated, this process can eventually cause hemorrhaging in the retina and put pressure on your optic nerve and macula. |
This severely impacts your ability to see and can potentially cause other serious problems in your eyes.
While concerning, high blood pressure is usually easy to treat with medication, diet, and exercise. High blood pressure has more of an impact the longer it goes undetected, so the earlier it is treated, the less damage it will do. Like most eye conditions, hypertensive retinopathy doesn’t have any outward warning signs or pain. If you have concerns about the health of your eyes, make an appointment today! 801-394-5709
